The Belief That Was Holding Me Back

For a long time, I believed you could build a successful business or have a healthy, thriving relationship.

But not both.

I never would have said that out loud.

But my calendar, my priorities, and the way I worked all pointed to that belief.

I thought success in one part of life had to come at the expense of another.

It turns out that was not reality.

It was a belief.

A few months ago, we read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks in Mortgage Mindset Daily.

He calls these Upper Limit Problems.

The idea is that we unconsciously create ceilings for ourselves because success beyond those ceilings feels unfamiliar.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized we all have beliefs like this.

Maybe yours is not about relationships.

Maybe it is:

“I have to answer every client call.”

“I need to work weekends if I want to succeed.”

“I am not ready to hire.”

“The market is why my business is not growing.”

The belief itself is not always the problem.

The problem is never stopping to question whether it is actually true.

Sometimes we spend all our time looking for a new strategy, a new tool, or a new opportunity.

But the thing holding us back may be a story we have been repeating for years.

A story about what success requires.

A story about what we are capable of.

A story about what has to be sacrificed.

So here is the question I have been asking myself:

What is one belief I have accepted as true that might just be a story?

That question can be uncomfortable.

But you may be surprised by what becomes possible once you stop believing something that was never true in the first place.
